The
Impact of Immigration on Women, Pregnant Women, and Children
The
primary goal of the community assessment to determine the needs of the immigrant
population in Jersey City. It will include the evaluation of the social and
health needs of the migrant population, more so the vulnerable population which
includes the illegal workers, immigrants, and their children, and immigrant
women who face a higher risk of discrimination, abuse, and low wages.
Target Population
The
target population is the vulnerable populations living in Jersey City. They
include the immigrants and their children, undocumented employees, and
immigrant women (Misra, 2013). The vulnerable population faces various social
problems, which includes discrimination and abuse that impacts on their health
outcomes.
Demographic Population
The
demographic composition of Jersey City has remained the same except the Asians
who increased by more than 51 percent of the total population (Al-Obaidi, West,
Fox & Savin, 2015). Out of the percentage of the people living below
poverty level, 85% of them were foreign-born immigrants including African
Americans, Hispanics, and Latinos (Al-Obaidi et al., 2015). Among the foreign
born immigrants, close to 60 percent are young people under 25 years. Al-Obaidi
et al. (2015) also determined that more than 50 % of the immigrant residents in
Jersey City are undocumented immigrants. The low-income immigrant population
only have access to low-performing schools and limited opportunities for their
development in the extracurricular activities
Migration and the Acculturation Process
The
process of acculturation into the American culture has been difficult for the immigrants.
For example, despite the presence of large health care providers, Jersey City
has a disproportionate proportion of health and social issues and a large
amount of immigrants who are low-income earners. The city’ poor population
suffers from high rates of school dropouts, high level of violence and diseases
(Messing et al., 2013). Most of the immigrants live in poor housing located in
insecure neighborhoods where people are unemployed and do not have access to
adequate basic health care services. The immigrants have been unable to
assimilate to the Native Americans cultures leaving them alienated.
Social/Health Needs
The
program will seek to deal with the various social and health needs within the
city. The immigrant population in Jersey City faces various health conditions
including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and substance abuse among others. A
health survey completed in 2011 by DeCamp, Choi, Fuentes-Afflick and Sastry
(2015) found out that 47% of the Jersey City’s population and more than 35% of
its population had no health insurance. The data of the survey also reported
that close to 25% of African American males were likely to die from cancer
disease compared to the white males (DeCamp et al., 2015). The program will
focus on providing access to health insurance to all immigrants including the
women and children.
In most occasions, the immigrants’ women and
children face discrimination and abuse from the authorities and the Native
Americans. The adverse social problems have led to an environment prevalent of
numerous diseases including mental health disorders and stress-related diseases
(Suplee, Jerome-D'Emilia & Burrell, 2015). The average cost of child health
care in Jersey City is not affordable to most low-income earners. Such social problems
will need adequate funding to deal with the housing and education challenges
facing the immigrants.
Type of Services
The
program will provide different kinds of services including health promotion
services to improve the health care outcomes among the immigrant population.
Coordination with key stakeholders would also be made possible making housing
more affordable and accessible. Health
education will need to be offered to improve the literacy about the health
issues within the society (Gibbons, 2015). Most importantly, accessibility to
health care and mental health needs to be offered to improve the foreign-born
residents accessing quality health care. Because of the social problems, the
immigrants faces high risks of suffering from mental illnesses
(Jerome-D'Emilia, Dunphy Suplee, & Gardner, 2014). Medical and counseling
services will be provided to the teenagers and women in improving the access to
contraceptives and creating awareness to reduce adolescent pregnancies.
Ethnic
Disparities in Health Outcomes
The three
determinants of health which influences the health outcomes of the migrants in
the United States includes the social, behavioral, and the environmental
determinants of health. The adjustments of these determinant factors usually
lead to health disparities which lead to adverse health outcomes among the
migrant population (Torres & Wallace, 2013). Therefore, it is important for
the United States government to come up with strong health care interventions
to improve the health outcomes.
The
social determinants of health define the varied social factors whereby the
migrants lives. The social aspects have an impact on the quality of life and
the health of the migrants. For example, the social determinants include the
social norms, access to resources such job opportunities, and exposure to
violence (Braveman & Gottlieb, 2014). In the U.S, there are various
approaches positively influencing the health outcomes of the migrants regarding
the social determinants including the improvement of the migrants’ access to
health and social needs. The U.S has improved the migrants' access to health
and social services. However, they require the migrants to obtain a legal
status which helps in giving them quality health services. For example, all
migrants’ worker children are entitled to receive immunization and prenatal
care for the women (Acevedo-Garcia et al., 2012).
Another
positive approach implemented by the U.S is the improvement of the neighborhood
conditions. The interventions of improving the neighborhood conditions include
the development of fair housing for the low-income earners migrants. The
housing has been implemented in cities within a large number of migrants
including Chicago, New York, and California (Acevedo-Garcia et al., 2012). It

influential in promoting the nature and positive implications of the health

literacy levels of the migrant population. A high level of education helps in
improving the health awareness among the migrant population.
Pickett
and Wilkinson (2015) found out that environmental factors account for close to
25 per cent of the migrant’s burden of diseases and close to 24 percent of the
overall number of deaths. Most migrants in the U.S faces worse social and
physical environments including discrimination and the exposure to crime
situations. Also, they face physical problems such as poor housing and lack of
quality schools and recreational facilities (Torres & Wallace, 2013).
Therefore, the adoption of positive approaches to the environmental issues on
the health outcome is important.
Some of
the positive approaches being implemented by the United States includes the
environmental protection programs. The U.S federal and states government have
developed programs which provide for the environmental rights of all migrant
population. The rights include the access to clean air and secure water. All
authorities have taken serious approaches to protect the nature of human health
and the overall environment (Gelatt, 2013). The positive health outcomes from
environmental protection approaches include the reduced levels of diseases such
as diabetes and neurodevelopmental disorders.
